Taila Baila Fort Geography
Tailbaila, also known as Telbaila fort, boasts a distinctive geological feature as a magmatic dyke. Dykes form when lava flows through a fissure and cools naturally over time. Within this formation, cone-shaped cliffs emerge, termed as volcanic plugs, while the inclined walls are referred to as dykes in geological terminology. This rock structure is a result of accumulated lava, forming a unique landscape. The Tailbaila fort trek provides a fascinating glimpse of this magmatic dyke, characterized by two walls separated by a gorge.
Positioned in a north-south orientation, the Tailbaila walls reach their pinnacle at an elevation of 3322 feet above sea level. Notably, the V-shaped notch nestled within the wall is discernible from the base village, offering a distinctive landmark for trekkers.
The initial phase of the trek introduces ruins of a temple and a goddess idol on the right side. Adjacent to the cave, two perennial potable water tanks provide essential refreshment. The spacious caves, accommodating 3 to 4 individuals, are complemented by a dry ditch in front.
Further exploration within the gorge reveals accessible areas devoid of the necessity for climbing equipment. A series of 4 to 5 steps carved into the rock lead to a small cave, embellished with three carved idols nearby. Additional discoveries include another cave and a potable water tank, contributing to the fort's historical charm.
Ascending to higher elevations requires navigating a set of 10-15 steps, with climbing ropes and harnesses aiding the climb. The summit, adorned with only a couple of trees, offers breathtaking panoramas of the plateau below and neighboring mountains. From Sudhagad in the southwest to Ghangad in the southeast and Korigad in the northeast, the surrounding landscape unfolds majestically. Additionally, the silhouette of Sarasgad is visible to the west, while the unparalleled vistas of the Konkan region complete the mesmerizing view from atop Tailbaila fort.
